With all of the daily stresses that we often feel, a back-pocket meditation technique like the Soham meditation can be a very useful and powerful tool to both quiet your mind and relax your body. The great part: all you need is your breath!

  • First, sitting in a comfortable position, close your eyes. Allow yourself to become witness to the inflow and outflow of your breath.
  • Continue by taking a slow, deep breath through your nose while mentally saying the word “So..” for the duration of your inhale.
  • Follow with a slow exhalation through your nose while mentally saying the word “Hum..” for the duration of your exhale
  • Continue like this for however long you wish! Notice how your inhalation naturally sounds similar to the sound “so,” and how your exhalation naturally sounds similar to the sound “hum.” If your attention drifts, gently and kindly return to your breath.

This meditation helps you focus on the now and here, staying in the present moment.

Fun Fact: In Sanskrit, soham means “I am that,” or “I am He.” As you practice this meditation, can you feel the link between you and the divine? Happy relaxing!
